Keep shooting
I played a lot of basketball as a kid. I loved it. In high school I thought I was a pretty good shooter. I worked on my form all the time. Elbows up, see the hoop between the elbows, cock arm back, flick the wrist, left hand comes off the ball straight like a board, LIKE A BOARD. Follow through. Boom. Swish…
But some games, I was off. I couldn’t hit a blasted thing.
My Dad would yell from the sidelines, “It’s ok! Keep shooting!” At first I found that was a bit odd of a thing to yell. Why the heck should I keep shooting? I’m throwing up enough bricks to build a house.
Although I didn’t know it then, I was learning while I was shooting. In the game. Every shot was a deposit into the bank of knowledge. And with every shot my probability of making those shots went up. My Dad knew that, my coach knew that. They wanted me to keep shooting, because with the hard work I had put in, probability was on my side.
The more reps we put in the better we get at that thing.
I’m doing more ACTUAL design work then I have done in awhile due to me transitioning into contract work for the time being. Yeah, I’m mid-career. But I am getting better. Yes, I am. It’s keeping me sharp, engaged, and LEARNING.
You should keep shooting. The more you shoot the more you learn, the more you learn, the more those shots will start to drop.
